Shiatsu Therapy

The intent of Shiatsu Therapy is to treat the root energetic cause of illness and disharmony, thus allowing the body, mind and spirit to come into balance and truly heal.  Some might describe it as a marriage, or merging, of Massage and Acupuncture.  Shiatsu, which originated in Japan, literally means “Finger Pressure” and is based on ancient Traditional Chinese medicine and the energetic meridian systems of the body.  Shiatsu is a full body treatment, and is essentially a massage of the meridians and acupoints plus the “branch”, or areas where you are experiencing muscular tension and pain. The techniques applied help move the “Qi”, or energy, and include a variety of pressure, rotation, kneading, stretching and exercising (of limbs and joints).  The work is often gentle and deep and can be both stimulation and relaxing, depending on the treatment given.

Shiatsu can help relieve a wide variety of disharmonies of the body, including issues with stress, sleep, digestion, immunity, energy, fertility, circulation, nervous system, allergies, menses and muscular pain.  It can also help your body and mind process and balance emotions, such as grief, anger, sadness, depression, anxiety, and fear.

Shiatsu treatments are customized per individual, based on your needs at the time of the session.  Sessions are usually done fully clothed on a Shiatsu table, Massage table, or Shiatsu Mat on the floor.  Clients are encouraged to wear comfortable, light clothing, such as yoga pants (or thin sweats) and a cotton shirt, free of buttons or zippers.  The session always begins with a discussion and assessment to determine the root imbalance per individual client, which will become the focus of the treatment.
