How can you help acupuncture work better?

Is there anything you can do while at home?


Three things:

Eat better food.

For almost everyone, eating a variety of foods- vegetables, fruits, meats, and grains- is a great plan for nourishing your body and staying healthy. Once you have a health problem to fix, you may want to be strict with your foods and stick to a diet of whole foods. Eating predominately vegetables can heal many health problems.

Whatever your pattern of disharmony may be, your body will get the most benefit from eating the most nutritious food possible every day. Nutritious, plant based foods will help heal your body faster. If you are only eating highly nutritious, easy to digest foods, your body will have more energy available to work out your health problem.

Eat whole foods- cooked vegetables, fruits, beans and nuts, rice, quinoa, millet, barley and other whole grains, and if your body calls for it, organic meat.

Eliminate sugar, all processed foods, and alcohol. Once your body is in top shape again you can have your favorite splurge foods occasionally, no need to deny yourself treats forever!


Pay attention.

Pay attention to how your body feels during acupuncture and during the week between acupuncture visits.

Pay attention to your emotional state. Are you feeling joyous and wonderful or are there weird feelings coming out of nowhere? Sadness, anger, fear? Old feelings may be churning themselves out, or you may need to examine an aspect of your life.

Trust your thoughts on how you feel physically and emotionally.

Pay attention to how the foods you eat affect how you feel, physically and emotionally.


Don’t skip treatments.

Acupuncture takes time to accumulate.  It unravels your problem until it is solved. I relate it to digging a hole in the sand at the beach near the water. If you dig only a shallow, little hole for a minute and then walk away, the water will flow over it and push all of the sand back in, but if you stay there and dig out one shovelful of sand after another, soon you will have a deep hole and even though the water flows over it, that hole will still be there. You can’t make progress if you don’t commit.  (The beach! Let’s close our eyes and imagine the beach…ahhhh)


Please be kind to yourself, accept your body and have compassion for yourself.  Take care of your body as you would take care of your own child, help it become the best it can be.
