Adagio Holistic Therapies, LLC is excited to host this very special 6-hour workshop with San Francisco, CA based Curandera, Margarita Carmarena who will lead us in the exploration of the powerful healer, sacred Copal. Copal resin is fundamental in Curanderismo as part of healings, ceremonies, and is the bridge between the visible and invisible worlds. We will explore and go in depth about each of these roles copal plays. During this class, we will explore:

• What is and where does Copal come from
• Healing properties and uses of Copal
• The responsibility of holding the Fire
• What are Limpias (spiritual cleanse) with Copal

Each participant will also receive a small kit with several samples of Copal and what you need to burn at home for your personal healing of your inner and your outer environment.

What is copal?

The resin of copal comes from trees. These trees are part of the Burseraceae family, under the categories of protium and Bursera trees. There are many different Copal trees that range from shrubs in the high deserts and Central America to enormous eighty feet tall trees in more tropical regions of central and South America.

Even though not all of these trees give the medicinal resin, we do have many trees that offer this sacred resin with varying colors, fragrance, texture, and energetic frequency. For this reason, each of these copal resins have different uses and purposes. We are going to take a look at samples of these and  go more in depth with some of them, experience their fragrance, texture, and learn more about how they are worked with.

The way that Copal is presented and burned is also sacred. These incense burners are known as Popoxcomitl. The practice is as sacred as the Copal itself and not everyone is allowed to “carry the fire.”

Traditionally, this sacred practice of "carrying the fire" was only given to those chosen by the fire itself and it was the priests and teachers who knew who these individuals were and would guide them into being ready to take on the immense responsibility. The responsibility of carrying fire includes being available for those who needed the healing of the sacred smoke and who needed a prayer over them or their situation. The Mayan elders literally call this task “the giving/passing of weight/responsibility”. People who were chosen could not say no after receiving it and they commit the rest of their life to being of service to their community and those in need for the rest of their life.

We will Learn about the history of the Popoxcomitl (Nahuatl language) or Saumerio (Spanish for in incense burner) and how it evolved through the ages. These differences will help you decide what kind of Popoxcomitl you connect with.

Please Bring a journal and pen to take notes and an open mind and heart.
